THE J. CREW MEN'S STORE
The preppy retailer's first men's shop delivers more than just khakis and button-down shirts. And you don't have to sidestep dresses to get to it all.
The Liquor Store Bar in New York's Tribeca neighborhood used to be an unassuming place where a guy could hang out with friends and sip a decent single-malt Scotch. Now the landmark spot is home to J. Crew's first men's-only store, opening this summer.
The tap may be dry, but the original wood bar is intact. Surrounding it are broken-in chinos, colorful shirts,
narrow-cut jackets, and hand-picked collectibles like John Derian paperweights, vintage LPs, and first-edition books.
Beyond J. Crew's arsenal of everyday classics, you'll find specially reproduced Red Wing bootsworn down to look like you've had them a lifetimevintage Timex watches, and Japanese-denim patchwork jeans. J. Crew also joined forces with the British label Thomas Mason on a high-end line of button-down shirts and with Mackintosh for a contemporary, shorter version of the classic raincoat.
"A guy can find an edited version of everything he should have in his wardrobe, including that one special piece that makes it different," says Todd Snyder, J. Crew's senior vice president of men's design, who set out on a scavenger hunt for the old-school pieces that round out the store's inventory. "Everything in the store is pretty much a collectible."

THE STORE'S CURATOR
Designer Andy Spade and advertising executive Anthony Sperduti recently teamed up to form Partners & Spade, the creative studio that worked with J. Crew on curating the men's store. The Jack Spade creator's advice for cultivating personal style: "Go back to your history and where you came from. Research things that are special to you and not available to everyone." Here's some of the loot that's on Spade and Sperduti's hit list.
1. Birdwell Beach britches
2. Globe Trotter luggage
3. Peter Beard sandals
4. Rugs, silver, and carved shaving kits from Marrakech
