THE OPENING: TOPMAN

News
Topman

For years Brits have had a style advantage—Topman. Now you can get in on the action without flying to London. The cult shop opens its first U.S. store in New York's SoHo neighborhood this month. Like the behemoth Topman in Oxford Circus, the shop here will fill its floors every couple of weeks with a fresh lineup of affordable jeans, shirts, suits, and coats. "The store has everything that's current right now," says design director Gordon Richardson. In addition to shopping Topman's regular mix, you can peruse the brand's upscale collection, Topman Design, or sift through its new Black Trouser Project—a collaboration between Topman and five designers, including Americans Patrik Ervell and Tim Hamilton—for the perfect pair of pants. And while you can't get fish and chips, you can get a taste of London, thanks to Topman's imported in-store stylist, Harry Hazel, who, at no extra cost, will whip up outfits for you.

LONDON CALLING
Topman's Harry Hazel has styled rock stars, and now hes here to dress you.

Q: What's a quick fix for a guy who wants to look more modern?
A: Start with a fitted suit. It provides a smart, versatile base and allows the wearer to add personal touches.

Q: What's an easy way for a man to make sure his clothes fit properly?
A: Don't always go by the size on the label. Take some time and try on a few different sizes. The best fit for you is not necessarily in the size that you think you are.

Q: You've styled rock stars, like the guys from Coldplay, MGMT, and Kings of Leon. Do they try to look like rock stars?
A: We're still seeing skinny jeans, although where it was in the obligatory black or blue, we're now seeing them in every color and wash. The rock look is constantly being updated with accessories like straw trilby hats and printed scarves.

Q: What's one U.K. fashion trend that Americans should co-opt?
A: The great thing about London is that it's about being individual and you can dress how you like—everything goes. Courtney Colavita

THE CORDUROY SUIT

Cord

For years now, the corduroy suit's ridges and valleys have appealed mainly to college professors, Wes Anderson wannabes, and the costume designer on That 70's Show. But this fall several luxury houses, like Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, and Ermenegildo Zegna, are taking a new approach to the durable classic, and the results should turn the heads of well-dressed men everywhere. The latest iteration is cut from a plush mix of cotton and cashmere and comes in gray, black, and chocolate brown. Grown up and slimmed down, this two-button suit has nothing in common with the bulky tan pants you wore to grade school. Courtney Colavita

ALL THE VICE PRESIDENT'S MEN: LEVI JOHNSTON PLAYS THE PART

Levi1
Courtesy of The Chicago Sun-Times

If Levi Johnston, son-in-law-to-be of Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, still had his old MySpace page, he might change the description of himself from "a fuckin' redneck" to "a damn stylish guy." Seriously. Did anybody else's jaw drop upon witnessing Johnston's staggering transformation from scruffy country boy (in a charming, Northern Exposure way) to matinee idol, ready for his close-up?

The makeover—which outdid the garden-variety ones that have become a morning-show standard—happened in two parts and must have required, one imagines, a small army of hair, clothing, and etiquette wonks. (What 18-year-old boy worth his weight in hockey pucks willingly holds his girlfriend's hand in front of her parents, let alone millions of their fellow Americans?)

Levi2
Courtesy of The Improper

Our first peek at this new, improved Johnston came Wednesday, when he landed in the Twin Cities looking photo-op ready. He'd ditched the oversize hockey jersey and opted for an appropriately casual gray, mock-turtleneck, half-zip sweater and brown chinos. His disheveled hair had been tamed into a respectable, future-dad do, and his mangy beard had been razed to reveal a strong jawline.

Less than 12 hours later, the metamorphosis was complete. Johnston entered the Republican National Convention at the Xcel Energy Center wearing a perfectly fitting navy suit, a blue oxford shirt, a navy and white rep-stripe tie, and a McCain pin on his lapel. The suit wasn't necessarily remarkable (neither are the courtroom duds worn by anyone styling himself as a stand-up guy)—the way it transformed him was.

Levi3

It may not have answered many—or any—political questions about the Alaskan governor or the McCain camp's vetting process, but it did put to rest lingering doubts that a man looks his best when he's in a well-tailored suit. He went from a schlubby, honky-tonk dude to a sophisticated hunk quicker than you can say shotgun wedding. Courtney Colavita

THE PURCHASE: THE JEAN JACKET

Jeanjacket_2
Photograph by Greg Delves. Denim jacket ($90) by Levi's.

The jean jacket may be the most egalitarian article of clothing a man can own. Embraced over the years by both the Establishment and the anti-Establishment, it transcends time, class, and trends. Wear an inky version with a polo shirt and khakis and it's unequivocally preppy; put the collar up on a washed-out model and it reads punk. But the most
versatileand modernbreed of denim jacket is close-cut and worn and looks like it came with a built-in history.  Courtney Colavita

MACKO'S MATERIALS: MGMT IS NOT RESPONSIBLE

-By Michael Macko, Details Fashion Director

"I'm feeling rough, I'm feeling raw, I'm in the prime of my life.
Let's make some music, make some money, find some models for wives."

Not since the Verve unleashed "Bittersweet Symphony" in 1997 has the fashion crowd found such an obvious anthem as they have in MGMT's "Time to Pretend."

Vervemgmt
Photos courtesy of Festival Freak and MGMT

The hit song is from the two-man band—Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden—whose synthesized sounds, trippy videos, and poignant-yet-ironic lyrics strike a chord with the disenfranchised fashion league of today.

The music video for MGMT's single "Time to Pretend"

The Brooklyn-based duo met in 2001 at Wesleyan University, where they started performing 15-minute, one-song shows at the college's notorious clothing-optional dorm. The set list? The Ghost Busters theme, performed ad nauseam, inspiring a cluster of fans to create an indie label just to produce the group's first six-song EP.

Fast-forward to the spring/summer 2009 men's runway presentations in Milan, Paris, and New York. Gucci's Frida Giannini, who played "Time to Pretend" as her event's last track, even went so far as to dedicate her show to the band. The producers of Gossip Girl—who are tapped into what's right now in the fashion world—used the song in the show's season finale this past May.

And the style love is widespread: Burberry's Christopher Bailey told me, "I love MGMT. I love the sense of romance and whimsy in their songs, and their sound and attitude is refreshing and modern."
