Lesson from Milan…Reconsidering My Pocket Squares

I'm a pocket square kinda guy. Suits just don't look right, right now, without one. After visiting Milan though, I think I have to reconsider my relationship with my pocket squares. In the past, I have been guilty of placing a pocket square on a suit and just leaving it there, neglecting it—but no more. The grace with which the guys in Milan manipulate the silk or linen is more representative of the character of the wearer than any other element in their outfit.

I've already taken the first steps at reconnecting with my pocket squares. My flight from Milan to Paris was delayed for about two hours so I just sat there and worked and reworked different techinques with my new buddy, the pocket square.

P.S. One of the other sartorial conundrums I have been wrestling with lately is the appropriateness of pocket squares with jeans or khakis. I mean, I know it works, but I was still a little on the fence about it. Well, not anymore—these two images have confirmed for me that it can be done, and done right.

With a keen eye and ever-present camera, Scott Schuman—better known by his nom de blog, The Sartorialist—has developed a loyal fashion world following for his portraits of well-dressed New Yorkers. We decided to turn him loose on the streets of Milan and Paris during Fashion Week. Here's what he found.
