On the Street…Parisian Casual

Paris_casual_1

The Parisian take on casual is not so different from New York's. They have even adopted our fondness for "le flip-flop." It helps that this guy is tall, but his look is kept from being sloppy by the fact that his shirt is slim and not too long.

One of the other trends I saw, but was not able to get a shot of, was the rolled hem on shorts. From the runways to the streets, men's shorts are getting slimmer and shorter (see the white shorts in my Junya post). Did you hear that, Abercrombie design team?

At Arnys

Arnowner

All the young editors hit Colette when in Paris. Too bad. If they really want to experience the craft of clothing, they should stop by Arnys. Like Charvet, the shop is a Paris institution. Although I cannot say I'm crazy about the styling or design, the sheer artistry of the clothes is incredible. I see guys from a place like Colette on the street a million times a day in Paris and New York, but a guy like Jean Grimbert of Arnys, above, is so original, unconventional, and unique.

Arnyshats

I can't even imagine how long they have been making hats like these.

Arncape

There is something about a custom-made, hand-sewn hunting cape that's more subversive than anything I've seen on a runway by Dior or Raf Simons.

Arnyspaint

Arnsales

Arnysshoulders

The Internet has created a subculture of gentleman who love to discuss the minutiae of handmade garments. Somewhere, there's a guy who's very excited about this bit of "tailor porn."

Arnties

A hand-stitched, unlined, seven-fold tie. The edges are a little uneven, and without a lining, the silk is a bit crumpled. There's a bit of a homemade feel, which to me makes it all the more beautiful.

A Parisian Street Musician

Streetmusician

If Dries Van Noten dressed a group of street musicians, wouldn't they have to look like this?

On the Street…The Milanese Influence

Milaninparis_3

Funny how some color combinations are specific to a city. This blue/gray combo is so Milanese, it really stands out in Paris.

Paris is all about this floppy-moppy haircut.

At Dries Van Noten

Dvdv_1

I don't know how Dries does it. No advertising and a comparatively low profile, and yet he's one of the most commercially and artistically successful designers in the business today. I don't know of another designer who's so consistently revered by both editors and buyers.

Dvflag

World Cup fever has hit the international cast of models and photographers especially hard. (In case you were wondering, Danny Beachamp is from England.)

Dvwalk

Dries was getting a little frustrated with the models during the walk-through. Apparently, "walk, turn, walk back" was a bit difficult for a few of the boys.

Dvwoman

I have been shooting mainly men for these shows, but this woman was so cool I had to include her.

On the Street…Collar Flip

Collarflip

The collar flip on woven shirts is big among the youth of Paris. I'm not condoning, just reporting.

On the Street…That Shade of Pink

Pinkpants_1

Here is a shade of pink (more washed out and flowery) that you really only see in Paris. In Milan, they wear a lot of colored jeans and cords, but the color is deeper and more saturated. Another difference between Paris and Milan: A Milanese gentleman would never have his jacket fit so loosely.

At Junya Watanabe

The Junya crowd was easily one of the best dressed of the Paris season.

On the Street…St.-Honore

Shonre_1

With a keen eye and ever-present camera, Scott Schuman—better known by his nom de blog, The Sartorialist—has developed a loyal fashion world following for his portraits of well-dressed New Yorkers. We decided to turn him loose on the streets of Milan and Paris during Fashion Week. Here's what he found.
