Q: I always wear a clean white pocket square—folded straight—when sporting a suit. But during the course of the day, it keeps disappearing into the abyss of my breast pocket. Should I resort to safety pins, or is there a less involved approach to keeping it in place?
A: A safety pin seems a little extreme. What if you suddenly had to blow your nose? It’s good to at least retain the spirit of utility. Try folding the pocket square in a rectangle rather than a square, to more closely fit the size of the pocket. My tailor, John Pearse, does something ingenious; he lines the breast pocket with a silk pocket-square-type material so that you can just pull up the lining for instant flair.
