Q: I recently purchased a snap-brim hat à la Humphrey Bogart in The Maltese Falcon. On the outside of the crown, around the hat ribbon, is a thin elastic cord with a loop on one end and a small cloth-covered button on the other. What is the purpose of this cord?
A: On a windy day, you can unloop this cord and insert the button into the buttonhole of your jacket or coat. If the wind takes your hat, it wont go far.
