Q: I’m getting married in a garden in June. I don’t want to wear a tux, so I bought a nice dark blue suit. I was thinking of having the groomsmen buy navy blazers and wear khakis. We would all wear matching white shirts and ties. Will it look strange for me to wear a suit and the groomsmen to wear blazers?
A: It sounds like you’d be getting married with a ’50s vocal group backing you up. I can practically hear “Michael Row the Boat Ashore.” It would be a mismatch for you to wear a suit and for the groomsmen to wear blazers and khakis. Tell the guys to wear dark suits, white shirts, and black shoes. If you need to put them in a uniform, buy them all the same tie and keep it simple. Better they should spend the money on your wedding gift.
