Q: I shave my head every other day, and it’s getting tiring. Is it at all common to wax your scalp, or would this be unbearably painful? I’m hoping this will eliminate occasional razor bumps by allowing my scalp to heal for a few weeks.
A: Waxing? It’s entirely possible, but before embarking on this course I highly recommend you watch an entertaining though harrowing short film called Brother-in-Law Getting His Head Waxed (www.flurl.com/uploaded/Head_Waxing_51150.html), directed by “Alukard,” in which a burly, tough customer named Phil has his scalp completely defoliated by the experienced Violet to the soundtrack of Johnny Cash’s rendition of “Hurt.” The music does not completely cover the ouches, ows, and oohs, and Phil’s saying, “You’ve gotta give me a second.” Undoubtedly, waxing lasts considerably longer than shaving does. But I don’t know if anything would be worth what Phil bravely endures in this film. Most of my friends use either the HeadBlade, designed specifically for head shaving, or state-of-the-art razors, like the Mach3. Waxing will eliminate razor bumps, but I know from experience that it can cause ingrown hairs.
