Q: I was disappointed by your response in the July issue to the individual who wrote about his boss’s wearing Levi’s 501 button-fly jeans and leaving two buttons open. The writer wanted to know whether it was polite to tell the boss his fly was open. You neglected to mention that it is very likely the boss left the buttons open intentionally. Gay men commonly leave one or two buttons open on their 501s. I’m sure you could check this out on any street in New York. Or Los Angeles.

A: Thanks. I believe you. But surely this is casual dress gone too far, as is the practice of wearing raincoats without trousers.
