Q: I recently started working at a stodgy Big Five accounting firm in New York City, and Im upgrading my wardrobe. I have been debating with my fellow drones as to whether black trousers are appropriate. I know black suits are for funerals (or gaudy Hollywood types), but I was wondering if the restriction extends to black trousers.
A: Black suits are serious. They are also good evening wear. Black trousers are OK. I have a few pairs of black chinos and a pair of black jeans, and I think they are quite wearable casually. They go well with vividly colored shirts. Just be careful wearing them with a white shirt: You might be mistaken for a waiter.
