Q: I have very expensive white shirts that have a persistent ring around the collar. What should I clean them with that won’t damage the shirts?
A: My expensive shirts always go to the dry cleaner. I live in Manhattan, where expert dry cleaners are easy to find. If similar excellence isn’t available in your area code, I’d do what I do with my lesser-priced whites and Shout that ring around the collar out. I also rely on good old-fashioned blueing for whiter whites. I use Bluette brand and put it in the additive compartment of the washing machine. Like bleach, blueing should always be diluted before touching your duds.
