Q: A colleague of mine who thinks he is very sharply dressed has his shirts monogrammed on the cuffs. I have always thought this was in poor taste. What do you say?
A: If there were rules, one of them would probably be: Never buy a used car from a man with his initials on his shirtsleeve. I dont know how this practice got started, but its quite common. European gents would be horrified by this ostentatious display. If you feel the need to personalize your shirts, and a laundry mark inside the collar is not enough, the monogram should appear on the breast of the shirt, either in the middle of the pocket or where that would be if there were a pocket. I have never cared much for monogrammed shirts, but I must say that wearing ones initials on ones shirt is far better than the now common practice of wearing the initials of ones tailor.
