On DVD tomorrow: an overlooked gem from a quirkaholic

Though visually arresting, The Guatemalan Handshake falls short of the mainstream's sweet spot by a plotline or two—the stunning, if difficult to parse, 2006 film is a meditation on blackouts, demolition derby driving, and the efforts of a girl named Turkeylegs to find her recently disappeared best friend (played by Will Oldham, a.k.a. musician Bonnie "Prince" Billy). If you're thinking quirky, you're in the right ballpark—director Todd Rohal gets that a lot. "Not my favorite word," he says, "but I guess there are worse." He's not going to change his reputation with tomorrow's double-disc DVD release, which comes with a critical essay from Pineapple Express director David Gordon Green (a fan, needless to say). Quirk, we guess, loves company.
