Five things worth doing today
- Befriend Manhattan's scariest socialites: American Ballet Theater's 68th Annual Spring Gala and Operation Smile's fifth annual event take place tonight in New York.
- Celebrate impolite performances: Igor Stravinsky debuted Rite of Spring today in 1913, and Marilyn Monroe delivered a sultry "Happy Birthday" to Mr. President John F. Kennedy in 1962 (see below).
- Raise a glass to wild youth: Pete Townshend and Joey Ramone were born today, in 1945 and 1951, respectively.
- Keep your reality-TV secret: Pretend you're not watching The Bachelorette, premiering tonight at 9 p.m. on ABC. (Better yet, don't watch it.)
- Practice your acceptance speech: Napoleon Bonaparte created the Légion d'honneur in 1802. Honorees would later include Akira Kurosawa, Valentino Garavani, Quincy Jones, David Lynch, Clint Eastwood, and, come July, Giorgio Armani.
