New music from Scarlett, Bun B, and Beck
Despite our usual reservations about actors making albums, Scarlett Johansson acquits herself admirably on her debut, Anywhere I Lay My Head, a collection of Tom Waits tunes that's out today. Covering a variety of tracks from the Waits canonand not only A sidesshe proves herself a halfway decent chanteuse. Her throaty growl is a couple (hundred thousand) cigarettes behind Tom, but it's hard to fault her for that. Check out the video for "Falling Down" below.
Also out today: Bun B's II Trill, the Texan rapper's first album since the untimely death of his UGK partner Pimp C from an overdose late last year. (Listen on MySpace.) Finally, head to Beck's site for a stream of "Chemtrails," the first song from his yet-to-be-titled forthcoming album. The track finds Beck wearing his psych-folk heart on his sleeve, and has the feel of a woozy Brian Wilson number. Alt-rock's favorite son on sunshine pop's elder statesman? We're so there.
