Double Dutch

We've enthused over gins infused with saffron, exotic African fruits, and more botanicals than you can shake a stick at. New Amsterdam gin plays it straighter than that, although it does have bright, citrusy notes. The recently launched spirit (from E.& J. Gallo Winery and not, as might be expected, New Amsterdam Brewery) was inspired by New York City: Its name, of course, refers to the 17th-century Dutch settlement that evolved into modern-day Manhattan, and the gin comes in a bottle shaped like a skyscraper. Added bonus: It's $13.99 a bottle. Unlike almost everything else about NYC, it's cheaper than you'd think.

As a lover of gin, it has been a decades long progression of enjoyment that started with Gordon's,lead to Beefeater, Boodles, Tanqueray, and not lastly, Bombay Sapphire. But there's a new gin on the block, and it may knock off the reigning champs. In this climate of cutting back, down-sizing, and belt-tightening, I recommend one major league alternative to all of those expense cousins: New Amsterdam! A great tasting gin that harkens back to the very foundation of the drink that originated in The Netherlands. Give it a shot. My guess is that you will instantly discover a drink that will cost a third of what you're used to paying, and that you will love it to boot!
