- Japan holds its traditional Tanabata Star Festival, at which all wishes made on stars are said to come true—especially, apparently, those for love or improvement in the skills of needlecraft and calligraphy.
- Be-glad-it's-not-you TV: National Geographic Channel's newest Locked Up Abroad profiles a safari party kidnapped by Hutu rebels in the Ugandan jungle, tonight at 9 p.m. (Spoiler: Half of them are hacked to pieces by machetes.)
- Today in 1946, Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini—a.k.a. Mother Cabrini—became the first American citizen to be canonized.
- And today in 1940, Ringo Starr was born. The Geico cavemen have nothing on Ringo's '81 take:
