Old models never die

You don't have to be a hard-core biker to appreciate Peter Gantriis' new book: There are more than 100 examples of stunning design in The Art of BMW: 85 Years of Motorcycling Excellence, which covers the marque's history from its beginnings as a manufacturer of warplane engines to its latest 128-horsepower superbike. The focus, though, is on the company's pre-World War II models—vintage knockouts like the R32 (1925), R47 (1927), and R16 (1931). Their old-school airplane gauges, saddle-leather seats, and wooden features suggest that when it comes to posterity, it's the details that count.
