Deep purple

The West Village might already be supersaturated with upscale boutiques, but the latest has still piqued our interest. Called Kesner, the bi-level space (opening Friday) features the requisite vintage decor—think Art Deco club chairs and a chandelier from 1905—plus wallpaper made from pinstripe suiting fabric. The accent color of choice? Purple, which the shop's owners presumably intend to suggest royalty. Happily, the clothes aren't quite at the regal price-point: Expect to find a collection of apparel by the likes of Tim Hamilton, Gilded Age, and Patrik Ervell, but also newcomers such as Parisian label Melinda Gloss (suiting and outerwear), and L.G.R. sunglasses, a new line based on vintage Italian shades. Sure, this might not be the most ideal season to be opening a new menswear store, but expanding our horizons is always welcome.
