Erotic art and a new club night warm up South Beach
January 13, 2006For the past few seasons, South Beach scenesters have been doing the reverse commute and taking taxis to the mainland for big nights out. That may finally be changing. First we told you about Snatch; now, the Forge (above) has reopened its adjoining nightclub space, once home to Jimmy'z. After standing vacant a few years, the venue, rechristened Glass, has received an all-white overhaul courtesy of local designer Alison Spear, dotted with leather sofas and avant-garde art installations to give models and their admirers something to talk about between tequila shots. The best night to check it out is Wednesday, when legendary South Beach promoter Michael Capponi draws a crowd of grown-up, moneyed club kids for his weekly party.
Of course, there's always another club. Rather more unexpected is the recently opened (and delightfully bizarro) World Erotic Art Museum. Its $10-million collection of kinky ephemera was amassed by a single filthy-minded widow, and includes everything from cheeky bottom-baring Victorian figurines to a pillow book, Japan's calligraphic version of the Kama Sutra. Go now before someone protests loudly enough to get it shut down.
