Baggage Excess

Tumi targets "a whole new level of consumer"

August 24, 2007—While some travelers elect to adorn their black roller bags with strips of bright-yellow duct tape, there are better ways to stand out at baggage claim. Like really nice luggage, for instance. The new Townhouse Collection from Tumi—perhaps best known as a leading purveyor of those aforementioned black rollers—definitely deserves a look. Handmade from Italian leather (or in some cases a combination of leather and Tumi's signature ballistic nylon), the classically styled line is a departure for the brand. Credit the shift to new creative director David Chu, who says the 25-piece collection—which ranges from gym bags to wheel-aways to steamer trunks—was inspired by the "era of steam ships and [early] aviation, when people traveled in great style. I wanted to combine old-world craftsmanship with new materials." But despite the Gatsby-era vibe, the line's purpose is purely contemporary. "Private yacht-chartering and private jet service have created a whole new level of consumer," Chu says. "And they want something to go with that lifestyle." Gulfstream in the shop? No worries: Bigger pieces come with a rugged nylon slipcover—perfect for protecting against overzealous baggage handlers. Yellow duct tape strictly optional.

Tumi Townhouse Collection, from $450 for a carry-on satchel to $2,900 for a steamer trunk, available from Tumi stores nationwide and at www.tumi.com
