When it comes to underwear, go with the best

December 5, 2005—In an underwear market brimming with bright hues, fussy designs, and name-brand waistbands, perhaps the smartest way to stand out is by keeping it simple. Century-old Swiss company Schiesser has put that philosophy into action with its new Revival line, which is flying off the shelves at hip boutiques such as Alpha in L.A. and New York's Opening Ceremony. "We've done extremely well with the men's collection," says the latter shop's Olivia Kim. "We can't keep items in stock." No wonder: The line is a perfect mix of subtle style and old-world quality. Highlights include knit boxers and briefs, Henleys (above), and fitted T-shirts in basic beiges and whites. All are supersoft, well-made, and unfussy (raciest detail: mother-of-pearl buttons). With its European collection, Schiesser has lately moved in more garish directions, but, says a company rep, "We have a long tradition of appreciating fashion with a soul that lies beyond fast-living trends." Damn right: Let the Germans have their funky briefs—keep sending us the basics, bitte.
