Lend Him Your Ear
David Lynch's surreal plea for peace
July 21, 2005Who knew David Lynch was so anti-violence? After the New York Post reported that the director of Blue Velvet was establishing something called the Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace, we recalled a few less-than-serene scenes from Lynch's body of work. To wit:
Blue Velvet (1986): The matter of the unauthorized ear removal.
Wild at Heart (1990): Willem Dafoe shot through the skull; Sherilyn Fenn soaked in blood.
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992): Laura Palmer is murdered by her father, who was under the influence of Bob, a disembodied spirit who manipulates humans to commit acts of sex and violence.
Lost Highway (1997): Robert Loggia drives a tailgater off the road, pulls him out of his car, and pistol-whips him.
The Straight Story (1999): After an 8-year-old girl comments on his odd choice of transportation, Richard Farnsworth gets off his riding mower and hacks the child into several dozen pieces with a machete.*
