In the Rolls RoyceBentley split a few years back, BMW won custody of Rolls, and Bentley had to go live with Volkswagen. The arrangement gave VW some funny ideas, which explains the Phaeton, a porky, $90,000 Passat that, as expected, completely tanked in the U.S. market. But while a luxury "people's car" didn't make much sense, an "affordable" Bentley proved a stroke of genius: The Continental GT (based on the same platform as the Phaeton) has been flying off showroom floors ever since its introduction in 2004. The theme here is indulgence over performancethe womb-like interior comes stitched in 11 different hides and has every comfort imaginablebut performance is nothing to sniff at: zero to 60 in 4.3 seconds, and a top speed of over 200 mph. Just don't let anyone know you're actually driving a VW.
