Designed by BMW (before the Germans bequeathed the company to the Fords of Motown), the Rover will never win a single objective performance or utility comparison. Yet it remains immensely satisfying, from its proper carriage shape to its thronelike chairs and unerring steering. A silky Jaguar V-8, with optional supercharger, has replaced the BMW engine, and it's got just enough power to overcome its nearly three-ton weight problem. Four decades of Rover heritage help compensate for a slew of typically British quirks, from weird hieroglyphics on the switches to a CD player held hostage in the glove box to that legendary unreliability. Call it the luxury SUV that could cost less, for people who are happy to pay more.
