The Mercedes can't quite match the Range Rover's tweedy pedigree, but the Teutonic beast punishes the Rover in acceleration, hustling to 60 in just 6.3 seconds—not too shabby for a vehicle that tips the scales at 5,400 pounds. It also seats more than the Rover (seven full-size humans compared to five), rides as nicely, and is far superior ergonomically. It also costs a good $20,000 less. No wonder the company can barely keep the thing in stock. And, if you require even more bragging rights, er, towing capacity, the GL550 model adds a brawnier 380-hp V-8 and hulking 21-inch wheels (and, of course, EPA ratings to match).
