BioShock
BioShock is that rare thing in the easily-jaded gamer demographic—a title that actually lives up to the hype. Why it stands out: its original plot in a sequel-filled field (sorry, Halo 3), and its innovative gameplay, which requires more than just shooting everything that moves (ahem, Doom). Instead, you must solve the mystery of what happened in the underwater city of Rapture, using special powers called Plasmids to battle biogenetically engineered (and exquisitely rendered) creatures. (Think Waterworld with a hint of Myst, but a lot smarter than both combined.) Bottom line: an instant classic.
