Gears of War

Don't be fooled by the term: This third-person shooter is every bit as in-your-face as first-person Halo 3. (After all, your best friend during frequent hand-to-hand combat is a freakin' chainsaw bayonet.) Its emphasis on defensive techniques like seeking cover adds to the realism—and hiding is weirdly fun—which is balanced by the exaggerated graphics. (Protagonist Marcus Fenix resembles Jason Giambi on even more steroids.) Sure, the title recycles the old man-versus-alien plotline, but play is fast-paced, intense, and surprisingly team oriented. Bonus: safer than fighting in an actual war.
