The band was nicknamed "the Grateful Dead of punk"—and it wasn't a compliment. Too bad, as the disjointed riffs on this 11-minute epic are anything but jammy. (Richard Lloyd's majestic solo is after the second verse; Tom Verlaine's comes after the third.) "Unorthodox approaches on the frets toy with bebop and melody," Doug Gillard says. "The solo goes on right through part changes, changing dynamics, back to the intro, which is a guitar solo itself." It's so hypnotic that it could be twice as long—and in some bootleg versions, it nearly is.
