When people say EVH reinvented the guitar, they mean it literally: He built his own Charvel, which gave him his oft-imitated, never replicated tone. The second track on his band's self-titled 1978 debut, "Eruption," was actually a warm-up exercise that the album's producer persuaded Eddie to record. Lucky him, unlucky us: His patented right-hand finger-tapping technique and its legion of imitators have turned your local Guitar Center into the seventh ring of sonic hell. And yet, as John Varvatos notes, "It's like nothing I've ever heard." We're pretty sure he means that as a compliment.
