Don't let the name fool you—this isn't the same tequila once positioned as an "upscale" alternative to Cuervo Gold. Campari-owned Skyy Spirits bought the brand in 2004, and they've since made it into an entirely respectable, 100 percent agave tequila aged in American and French oak. (It's also, oddly, still distilled by Cuervo, though you won't find any hint of that on the label.) While it can't match the smoothness and complexity of more expensive quaffs, the new 1800 boasts an invitingly rich, woody taste. Its finish packs a bit more heat than we'd prefer, but then, it's never easy to leave one's roots fully behind.
