Proving it's better to be a grower than a shower, the hippest wines around these days are "grower Champagnes," which are produced by the little guys from their own grapes. (The large Champagne houses purchase much of their fruit.) Despite the artisanal airs, grower bubblies are actually cheaper than big-house brands of similar quality (lack of monstrous marketing costs will do that). And, because they're working with a smaller assortment of grapes, they also tend to show more distinctiveness from year to year. Gimonnet's all-Chardonnay Gastronome Blanc de Blancs Brut is a classic example of the type, made from the family's almost 64 acres of vines in the village of Cuis. Order this intense, concentrated, superdry Champagne off the wine list and show the sommelier who's boss.
