Even at its regular price of $33—you can find it for as little as $22—this is hands-down the best bubbly value out there. Piper-Heidsieck sits solidly on the palate, rather than foaming over it, and it's crisp and slightly tart, with notes of wet stone, citrus, Indian spice, and ginger beer. A multivintage blend—you don't get a vintage for 22 bucks—it's made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. High-end Champagnes may eschew the former grape, but Pinot Meunier does provide the lively fruitiness and immediate drinkability found in the best low-budget Champagnes. The grape doesn't age as well as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but, then, you buy this stuff to drink it down not pass it down.
