Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Brut

Fran�ois Clicquot died in 1805, leaving his young wife, Nicole-Barbe Ponsardin, to run the family's Champagne business. Though in mourning, the widow ("veuve" in French) somehow excelled at making the ultimate party drink, increasing production and profits. She also invented the riddling rack, in which bottles are rotated so that the dead yeast cells from fermentation settle into the neck of the glass, to be disgorged later. These days, Veuve Clicquot is owned by LVMH, and its bread and butter is its nonvintage Brut, known, for obvious reasons, as "Yellow Label." The wine inside is quite effervescent, clean, and crisp, with a bright citrus and apple character. It's straightforward, with commendable consistency and availability.
