Gaja Sorí Tildin, Nebbiolo Langhe

Several years ago the owner of this winery decided to befoul his single-vineyard Barbarescos with five percent Barbera grapes. Insane? Some thought so—as they would no longer be 100 percent Nebbiolo, his wines would lose their status as official Barbarescos. Turns out that the declassification didn't matter: Genius is genius, whatever the name. The powerful 1999 has all the best elements of the Nebbiolos—tastes of ripe strawberries, hints of vanilla and aromas of eucalyptus and roses—with the added acid-reducing qualities of that blasphemous Barbera.
