Barolo versus Brunello—it's the wine world's equivalent of Ali-Frazier. While the flashy Barolo gets all the attention and accolades, there are those who feel that the more understated—and underhyped—Brunello is the greatest of all time (at least in Italy). No matter where you fall in the debate (which assumes you're lucky enough to have sampled either wine), it's hard to deny the appeal of the Brunellos Gianfranco Soldera produces on his Casse Basse estate. Made entirely from Sangiovese Grosso grapes, these delicious wines (especially Soldera's interpretation) need at least ten years of aging. Which means that the 1995 Soldera is just starting to show its true form. Look for flavors of tart black cherries, and lots of tannins.
