Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion
Like many great French vineyards, Bordeaux's La Mission Haut-Brion was founded by monks. Bored, lonely, thirsty monks. They're now long gone, but the winery lives on, and it rivals many of the Bordeaux biggies, including its sister châteauthe famous First Growth Château Haut-Brionat a fraction of the price. Where Haut-Brion's trademark is graceful elegance, La Mission, as it's called, is known more for power and depth. The 2003 is a particularly massive wine, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, with whiffs of soil, tobacco, and licorice.
