Giacomo Conterno Barolo Monfortino
When Giovanni Conterno (a.k.a. "The king of Barolo") passed away a few years ago, many were concerned about the fate of his famed vineyardafter all, many regarded Conterno's Monfortino Barolo the world's greatest red. As it turns out, such worries were unfounded: Conterno's 38-year-old son, Roberto, has been doing an exquisite job with the temperamental Nebbiolo grape. And while any Monfortino is a treat, if you've got a choice, go for the '98. It boasts a wide variety of aromas (look for tar, truffles, and roses), balanced against just the right amount of tannins.
