Opus One Proprietary Red

Founded as a joint venture between Robert Mondavi and Mouton-Rothschild (which still owns half of the vineyard), Opus One produced its first wine in 1979. Though you'd be surprised based on the winery's current rep, the first offering was a bit of a flop. That's changed in the intervening decades, and today Opus One may well be Napa Valley's most prestigious operation. Its wines reveal both Northern California ancestry (i.e., opulence and power) and Bordeaux lineage (elegance and finesse). After spending 20 months in new French oak, the intensely concentrated 2003 has notes of cedar, vanilla, wild berries, and spice. Not to mention copious amounts of brand recognition (which never hurts when you're trying to show off a little).
