Tenuta San Guido, Sassicaia
Not even a world war was enough to stop a motivated vintner from plying his trade. In 1944 the owner of the Tenuta San Guido estate (a cousin of Chianti's famed Antinori family) began planting Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes around the Tuscan village of Bolgheri, because he believed that the terroir there was similar to Bordeaux's. Turns out he was on to something: In 1968 he released the first Sassicaia, and Super Tuscans were born. Four decades on, Sassicaia ranks with all the great Bordeaux and Cabernet Sauvignons of the world. The complex, full-bodied '99 has aromas that hint at black currants and cassis, enveloped in dark, brooding tannins. Super, indeed.
