Burgerville
Beef isn't exactly environmentally friendly (even Al Gore gets criticized for his, ahem, "meat footprint"), but let's face it—it sure does taste good. Pacific Northwest–based Burgerville splits the difference, with flavorful food and a strong focus on seasonal ingredients and environmental sustainability (Canola oil recycled into biodiesel, wind-generated electricity). Its Pepper Bacon Tillamook Cheeseburger exemplifies the mini chain's locavore philosophy: It's made from hormone-free beef raised in state, plus cheddar from Tillamook County and bacon sourced from local farms. The beef is chopped instead of ground to provide a looser patty that traps any juices that might otherwise seep out. These folks also offer excellent shakes, whose flavors vary with what's available in the agriculture-rich surroundings (think pumpkin and hazelnut in fall, fresh strawberries in spring). And there's no need to leave your vegan girlfriend at home: The menu includes two meat-free options.
