Ardbeg Airigh Nam Beist 16
Along with Lagavulin and Laphroaig, LVMH-owned Ardberg is one of the big three Islay distilleries to specialize in massively peated whiskies. Gaelic for "lair of the beast," Airigh Nam Beist refers to the loch where this particular whisky draws its spring water. A nice detail, to be sure, though you're probably more concerned with how to pronounce the mouthful of a name. Here goes: "Arry Nam Baysht." As for a mouthful of the actual whisky, Ardberg's signature deep-peated bonfire flavor is nicely balanced out by a malty sweetness, not to mention the smoothing effects of 16 years in the cask. The result is a quaff that's both mellow, and in Islay style, distinctively smoky.
