Conglomerates like Diageo are often given a hard time by purists, but the fact is, plenty of distilleries may well not exist without corporate backing. Dalwhinnie, tucked away in a remote corner of the Highlands, is one of them. The brand makes whisky on just two stills and cools its spirits in horizontal coiled copper pipes known as "worm tubs," one of very few still doing so. The result is an earthy and delicious quaff, with a gorgeously lingering finish.
