The Balvenie is a small distillery hidden behind the world's biggest, the Glenfiddich. Though they share the same owner and occupy the same site, the two couldn't be more different: While the Glenfiddich distillery is an all-singing, all-dancing tourist center, the Balvenie remains a cottage operation, with traditional floor malting and a hands-on approach. The result? A true whisky enthusiast's quaff. The 21-year-old benefits from some quality time in oak, plus a finish in port pipes, which supplies a rich, fruity quality. While some port-finished whiskies can be clumsy and disjointed, the Balvenie is the perfect smooth dram.
