Don't sniff at Smirnoff—cocktail gurus may be notoriously and universally sniffy about vodka as a genre, but this is the brand they often stock; serve it to guests blind and they'll likely agree (in other words, never underestimate the power of the designer bottle). Originally cooked up by an Imperial-era Russian named Smirnov (whose Revolution-fleeing son later Francofied the family name), Smirnoff gave the original kick to a Moscow Mule, Bloody Mary, and Screwdriver. It was also, of course, Connery-era Bond's brand of choice.
