Stolichnaya
This Cold War holdover was originally churned out for Russian politburo bigwigs (the name means "from the capital"); but those capitalist-minded commies were smart enough to export it as early as 1965, when it quickly became a staple offering at three-martini lunches in New York City. The wheat-and-rye mix it's made from is grown in the black soil of Russia's so-called bread basket, near the town of Tambov. The witch-hazelish nose is sharp and clean, with a gentle mouthfeel that transitions to a mulelike kick in the rear. In other words, to a certain generation, just how vodka ought to taste.
