Hublot is known for its edgy—maybe even a little weird—material mash-ups. The entire design team works under the mantra of fusion, pairing gold with ceramic or tantalum or magnesium. The resulting combo is then mated to the company's signature rubber strap (Hublot was the industry pioneer of that now staple touch). Company CEO Jean-Claude Biver was trained at Audemars Piguet, and Edward Faber notes a striking similarity between the two firms' designs—though he acknowledges Hublot's emerging identity. "Hublot really comes on the scene as a fashion, style watch. But it's effective and good-looking, and at least they have a decent machine." Which seems only fair to expect when you're paying nearly $200,000.
