IWCit stands for International Watch Company, but you probably already know thatwas founded in 1868 by an expat Bostonian with the Euro-ready name of Florentine Ariosto Jones. He set up his watchmaking firm in Schaffhausen, a town tucked in the German-speaking part of Switzerland (smart move"The Germans have this mentality of accuracy and exactitude and overengineering," explains Edward Faber with a laugh). IWC's take on a pilot's timekeeper first debuted just before World War II. "I like the Pilot's Watch: the proportions, the way the numbers are done, more so than the ultraseverity of the Portuguese," he adds. "And it's amazing that guys like Ralph Lauren are going round the world bidding these early Pilot watches up to $40,000 or more." Luckily, you can still get a new one for a little over five grand.
