IWC Portuguese Chrono-Automatic

No, it's not made in Portugal—like every other IWC, this model's put together in the German-speaking Swiss town of Schaffhausen. And the name did not come about, as some clock-watchers have it, because a Portuguese bank placed a mass order of IWC-branded bling for its VIP clients. Rather, the moniker refers to two Portuguese watch dealers, Rodrigues and Teixeira, who in the thirties tasked IWC with producing a wrist version of a marine chronograph—a major technical feat back then. A prototype was finally ready by 1939; this modernized riff on the classic design is just as big—and as elegant—as the original.
