Thank Bavarian-born Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf for dreaming up the world's first water-resistant watch (the original Oyster was also airtight and dustproof). Old Hans had a knack for hype, too, tapping sexy athlete Mercedes Gleitze to wear one while she swam the English Channel. It follows that today Rolexes are benchmarks for luxury and horological innovation (oh yeah, Wilsdorf also pioneered the first self-winding mechanism now used throughout the industry). "As goes the Daytona, so goes the world of collectors—you couldn't really reach manhood in the eighties or nineties unless you owned one," says Edward Faber. "This watch has presence without bulk, and it has been a desired and coveted macho icon for the last 30 years." Honestly, we see no reason for that to change.
